One (Many) iDevices to Rule Them All

On the eve of the next iPhone announcement (or will it be the New iPhone?), I'm taking a step back to re-review my personal electronic inventory.

And, as I do, I've come to the realization that while I might be a PC in terms of what's on my desk, the rest of my media experience is ruled by Apple. I have the iPhone as my personal phone. The New iPad is my travel companion and TV watching companion. The Apple TV has become one of my prime media consumption devices, so much so that I've now purchased two of them. To a degree, just being able to throw video up on the two different TVs from the iPhone or iPad was worth the price of entry. But add in the iTunes store and the NetFlix application and it really becomes quite a compelling device.

Also consider that not only do I have iPod integration in my car, but I go running with the combination of a watch band style case and an iPod Nano and suddenly I have become surrounded by Apple, Apple, Apple.

Am I concerned? Quite frankly, I am a little. I believe that surrounding oneself with a variety of solutions is a good thing. No one vendor has the secret sauce for all occasions. The marketplace improves due to competition but that's only possible if we aren't all insulated in a walled garden of technology - even though it can be more convenient.

To that end, I am considering changing my work phone from a now aging Blackberry to a Windows 8 phone. I think the recently announced Nokia 920 (controversial commercial aside) looks very nice. I played with the older Nokia Windows 7 phone models and they were very snappy and interesting to use. Microsoft has a pretty compelling touch offering in Windows 8, even if it really isn't that great for desktops.

Nonetheless, I will watch intently for tomorrow's news and will mostly likely order an iPhone 5 to upgrade my aging 4. The only remaining question is stick with AT&T and my bazillion carry over minutes or switch to Verizon.
